Blueberry Gin Sour

This cocktail is a twist on a delicious gin classic and I must say I enjoyed it rather a lot.

A few weeks into lockdown, a friend who lives just around the corner dropped a bag of delicious homemade goodies at our front door.  Inside were homemade scones and blueberry jam.  The accompanying note read…

“I might have gotten a little carried away with the vanilla”

The previous week she had spoiled us with a loaf of chocolate chip banana bread which was incredibly scrummy, so I had high hopes for these scones and jam.  I was not disappointed, the texture and flavours were fabulous, and yes, the jam was rather on the vanilla heavy side, but I love vanilla, so who cares.

Anyway, having received two care packages from her, I decided that I wanted to do something in return, but what?  Now, this little lady loves a cocktail, so I decided to try and find one which I could create using some of her blueberry jam.  Whilst perusing online I came across a recipe on the Craft Gin Club website which sounded pretty spot on.

A sour is a mixed drink made using a base liquor, a citrus juice (lemon or lime) and a sweetener.  In this case the sweetener is going to be the blueberry jam.

What you need:

  • 50ml gin
  • 2 tsp blueberry jam
  • 20ml lemon juice
  • 20ml egg white (This will give the froth on top.  Chickpea water is a great, vegan friendly alternative)

(I went very rogue and used 25ml Brockmans Gin a dark berry gin and 25ml Sir Edmond Gin a vanilla infused gin)

  1. Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Give it a good shake.
  3. Strain it.
  4. Shake again with no ice.
  5. Fine strain into your glass. (I used a coupe glass)

 

 

I must say the I was very excited firstly by it’s stunning colour and then by the flavour.  There was a great balance of sweet and tart, and enjoyed drinking it whilst eating a scone, heavily laden with cream and jam.

I made a little cocktail kit for my friend with a set of instructions and dropped it on her doorstep, she made it that afternoon and loved it!

So easy to make and very drinkable.
